European countries are undermining security with armed forces cuts

Lieutenant General Jonathon Riley

European countries were undermining regional security by relying on America and the UK to bankroll their defence, it was claimed...

Europe has been accused of relying on the US and UK to pay for defence “That is a dangerous assumption to make.”

Lieutenant General Jonathon Riley, who led British forces in Iraq and was Nato deputy commander in Afghanistan, called for higher defence spending by Britain as well as her EU allies.

He said: “There’s a line beyond which cuts make for a dangerous and false economy.

We have crossed that line.”

Mr Riley's comments come after the Royal Marines announced they will be cutting numbers by 200 so the Navy can operate new hi-tech aircraft carriers.
